welcome to my life in bullets, and im going to read this really great book about indian women now, hopefully the chapter about sati is over soon because burning scares me (mar, remember when you were deathly afraid of fire and we lived in a house heated by a wood stove? that was so...scary...)
cordelia, remember that the days preceding and including may 22, 2006 were full of life and fun except maybe a little lonely (but in a good way), chock full of unrealized crushes and desires and hopes with an impending sense of GREATNESS

| another day, another garden |
[09 Jun 2005|04:02pm] |
so i just had my meeting with Joe Brown, the director of the McKinley school. i wasn't nervous for this one, for some reason, even though with the morse school i was volunteering in an established program and at mckinley i'm trying to start something entirely new and different for them. anyway, after i left the office at 3ish, i ran up to the greenhouse to get one of our many many basil plants as a present for mr. brown. while i was waiting for him to finish school stuff, i talked to the secretary in the office and some of the teachers who were in there, and they loved my ideas for a garden at the school. they got excited about my shakespearean name and my fragrant organic basil, and i left one of the very extensive packets that i made during work today so they could read about the OGC, my background, the benefits of organic gardening and gardening in schools, and my exact plans for the school's yard. They were really excited about getting the students involved in the garden, which i think is really cool.
when mr. brown was ready to meet with me, we walked outside to look at the yard, and talked about what i want to do there. basically, i'm actually going to make two gardens, one in each yard. the smaller one (rectangular and closer to the road) is going to be landscaping-esque, planting flowers and maybe a bush or two to prettify it all. the other, in the more secluded yard (that already has raised beds installed with planks of wood...! the soil looks horrendous though) i want to do something called "no dig" gardening, which is basically laying down mulch (in my case, plain newsprint and a layer of hay) and then laying down a layer of top soil and compost on top of the mulch. over the course of the year, the mulch 1) kills the grass and weeds that were previously in the plot, and 2) starts to improve the soil. this is perfect for this project because it means that we can start planting pretty soon (you can cut through the mulch for plants that already have larger root structures) and it will improve their soil for next year as well.
joe brown is AMAZING. he wants to help out in any way he can, and let me do my thing in their yard. it's going to be awesome. i think i can get free hay bales and/or topsoil from craigslist, and he offered to send his van driver (?!) wherever i want to pick it up and bring it to the school, which was my main worry - there's all of this material available but i can't get at it without a vehicle! he also really wants to be able to have the kids involved in august and september, and by that time the garden will be lush and flourishing and it'll be so much fun. he even said something about taking a field trip to the morse school, and i'm really glad that gretchen offered to be a 'reference" for me, because i put her email on the info packet i made for him.
hopefully i can start doing stuff tomorrow (i don't work on fridays anymore so i can spend more time there during the day!!) and get the mulch/topsoil in by next week. this project is going to move so fast, and my heart is beating even faster with the anticipation of having my own plants actually growing in the ground a 2 minute walk away from my apartment.
once i get supplies lined up, i think i want to have a mulching party...who wants to help!?! it's going to be such a great tiiiime.
ps. another project that is even crazier, in my opinion, that dean elmore is having me do: (in relation to my "hidden treasures of BU" project) he wants me to go to each of them with a CAMERA MAN and play like bridget jone's II, talking about the place and why it's cool and secret...and then put it on the BU website...monthly...so basically i am going to be a travel guide to BU....his ideas for names so far are "cordelia's corner" and "cordelia: merchant of cool" so basically i'm going to have to fix THAT, but otherwise, who has a better job than me!? no one.

and a song for the day:
Sufjan Stevens - Romulus (track 9 from "Greetings From Michigan, The Great Lakes State")
Sufjan Stevens - Decatur (track 7 from "Illinois")
BUY THOSE CDs THEY ARE SO GOOD (BU kids - get yr tickets for he is coming to play for us at the somerville theatre in sept.)
looove, cordelia
